Six more Schulich Leaders join the #2019SLSquad!

USask expands their squad with 2019 science recipient Morgan Beattie. Morgan is a graduate of Marion M. Graham Collegiate in Saskatoon, SK. Previous grad Teah Zielinski won the scholarship at USask in 2014. An accomplished athlete, Morgan has excelled in various high-level club and school athletics, including Junior Huskies Volleyball and the Senior Girls’ basketball and volleyball teams at Marion Graham. She’s also taken on the role of mentoring fellow athletes and was named captain of both her school basketball and volleyball teams this year. Joining Morgan at USask is engineering recipient Ashim Dhital from St. Mary High School in Prince Albert, SK. Ashim is also the second scholarship recipient from his school – Mark Krammer won the SLS in 2014 at Western. Ashim was awarded the Young Leaders Award in 2017 and 2018 by the Lions Club for volunteering more than 50 hours annually at theVictoria Hospital in his hometown. He was also awarded a Community Involvement and Leadership Award in 2018 by the Air Cadets League of Canada for inspiring young cadets.  

Joining the UManitoba squad is science student Mia Battad. Mia is a graduate of Balmoral Hall School in Winnipeg, MB. Fellow Balmoral grad Ella Thomson won the SLS in 2013 also at UManitoba. During her time at her high school, Mia co-founded a robotics club for the middle school girls at Balmoral. She helps the students build their robots, solve problems, and work effectively as a team. Their team, Blazers Robotics, competed in Edmonton, winning the Rising Star Award for an outstanding performance for their first time competing. U Manitoba’s engineering recipient this year is Nikolaus Reichert from Garden City Collegiate in Winnipeg, MB. Nikolaus designed a telemetry system for a high-altitude balloon that was able to record three times the amount of data compared to what was received in previous years. Rather than simply record temperature (as occurred previously), the system was capable of collecting temperature, humidity, and pressure data in-flight.

UMontreal adds two new Leaders to their squad. First is science student Alexanne Bisson. Nominated by Cégep régional de Lanaudière – L’Assomption Campus in L’Assomption, QC, Alexanne is the second recipient from her school. Camille Comtois previously won in 2016 at Laval. In 2017 Alexanne created a volunteer project to promote reading to Grade 4 students at the Adélard-Desrosiers school, located in a disadvantaged neighborhood. She wrote a personalized story to each of the students in five classes, according to their interests, and then had them read during an activity. Joining her at UMontreal this Fall is engineering student Danick Lamoureux. Danick was nommianted by Collège François-Xavier-Garneau in Quebec, QC. A scientific ambassador and tutor in chemistry, math and physics, he has a passion for encouraging young people to pursue STEM. He was appointed President of Research and Development of a student company where he participated and developed ambitious projects like compost optimization at Cégep Garneau, waste treatment in his community and the use of the hydroponics in the field of agriculture to help with the production of food.
